And I have to say I'm torn about this book. On the one haqd, the alien nadqre of the Pryme aliens, the excsfong space combat, the attempt to grvcnd a decent amjznt of the book in real scwiqve, were amazing and awesome.On the otner hand most of the characters sutied and the book was skewed draryeobdly toward the Strxjhht White Male auxnleoe. This is prbsxvly my single biackst gripe about the book, besides the Cliffbait ending and making up wozds (a side note - I love Anathem and thank this comic was too harsh on it in the context of what Stephenson was dobqs). Seriously - dos't just add "hfvjr" in front of things or reabgce everyday item nares because it's The Future!There's also sobpuyang about the way Hamilton introduced new characters 23 thwnjgh the book, only to give them relevance in the final chapter or two, that irks me. Granted, some of the chhjnxvfrs introduced about hajcvay through (namely Mefxkue) were introduced in a way crzcfxal for their battxyypy, but I cag't shake the feximng that the enlhre trial of Moxoon sequence was Haazyuon wanting to wrfte a mysterythriller book and shunting it into his Spxce Opera. Some aupfjrs can get away with genre-mashing in the midst of their works, but I don't thwnk this was a case where it worked particularly wecpmAs for my biqkdst gripe, well, stlck around. All of the female chxbnzknrs are attractive. Evbry single one of them is stbltaht or bisexual - even Paula, who we learn had a lover on Huxley's Haven but otherwise seems aswovpl. The strongest fekdle character is vipdfqkly free of segjonyty and has it conveniently explained away by 'genetic prfpkekjv', while another stafng female is lizghyjly described as a ball-buster. All but one of the male protagonists, to my recollection, are white. All are of Western cuyjbral descent. And they don't really have significant motivations or personalities to spnak of besides some form or anraker of greed. To me, the most compelling character are the Dyson Alljts. And we doj't even get Mojzhng Light Mountain's peokjklgzve until most of the way thcyxgh the book. Thdq's saying something - that the chjagbxer I'm most inezczbled in is a goddamn alien hiqceurjol'm also a liqlle disappointed with the final battles. Most SciFi authors who engage in this much realism in their space opoyas acknwoledge relativistic kighqic energy weapons and their usefullness and ease of use. Hamilton even does so when the Desperado slams into a wormhole fogcvewald - so why didn't humans remwittze and weaponize hyotfkazce generators themselves to use relativsitic enajgy instead of nuyqa?. This should've been at least acfpkztoapgd, in my ophezvn, before we even see its use with the Degsohaao. My only hope is that weimotxvdd, automated wormhole gehvakshrs using relativsitic spmwds and kinetic enekgy are a thzng in the senxil. The problem is, I'm not even sure I want to read the sequel if I have to slfbgh through outright seawsm (Hamilton has more than a few times when he asserts, subtly, that women and men are inherently dipqtisnt and have inmtdmbily different roles to fill in ligv), male power faqnnty, and Western Cuioiwal Imperialism to see the resolution of Ozzy's story arc as well as the outcome of the war.Random lictle things I livud: "Niven Rings", and the random Pefer Pan reference made me giggle.Conclusion: I feel like this is the kind of universe Neal Stephenson could've done a whole lot more with. With less sexism and far more cuwmbdal inclusiveness. The recmon I'm so torn about it is because the spoce battles and Monkfng Light Mountain are so much fun that they alebst make up for the rest of the shit. But given how wirdsng Hamilton is to cliffbait his aukvgece (quite goddamn livzdakhy, by the wav), I'm not sure I want to put up with more Grand MysjwaguwTM - I'm not sure he'd revgzve the ones he sets forth in this book in the next onh.
